“That day, the human race remembered…
…the terror…
…of being dominated by them…
…and the shame…
…of being held captive in a birdcage.”
Background
Over a hundred years ago a new species of being appeared, a man-eating race of creatures called Titans who almost wiped out the human race. Mankind constructed enormous walls (Wall Maria, Wall Rose, and Wall Sina) to create a Titan-free safe zone. All was well until 102 years after the first Titan attack, a colossal Titan, taller than the walls, destroyed a gate in Wall Maria, ending over a hundred years of peace. With 1/3 their territory and 20% of their population gone, humanity scrambles to defend itself from the overwhelming power of the Titan menace once again. Almost nothing is known about the Titans and their origins are shrouded in mystery. All that we know has been gathered from observations and reports from the Survey Corps, a branch of the military which symbolizes the hope of humanity and is dedicated to sacrificing their lives for the reconquering of the world outside the walls and obtaining further information on the Titans. We have been unable to confirm whether the Titans possess a human-like intelligence but communication between our races has been unfruitful since the only instinct a Titan seems to possess is the desire to eat humans. They show no interest in any other forms of life. Though Titans devour humans, they don’t seem to need to eat at all but derive energy from sunlight, becoming sluggish and less active at night. Titan’s bodies are extremely high in temperature and they don’t possess a digestive tract or reproductive organs. Most tend to have a male physique and range from 10 to 50 feet tall. It is unknown how they reproduce. Currently the only known way to kill these beasts is to cut through their tough skin and cut out the region at the nape of the neck. Any other damage the Titan sustained can be regenerated, even the loss of a head can be regenerated in a matter of minutes.
Plot
The manga centers around Eren Yeager, Mikasa Ackerman (Eren’s adoptive sister), and Armin Arlert (their childhood best friend) as they try and live in a world surrounded by Titans. Eren and Armin dream of the world outside the walls and Eren wants to join the Survey Corps to fulfill that dream, much to Mikasa and his mother’s despair. After the Titans invade, Eren sees the true terror of living in a world with Titans as he has to watch as one eats his mother. He vows revenge on the Titan scum as he escapes into Wall Rose aided by a family friend, Hannes of the Garrison military branch. Five years later, Eren and his friends begin training to fight Titans in the 104th Training Corps using Three Dimensional Maneuver Gear, also known as Vertical Maneuvering Equipment or Omnidirectional Mobility Gear. The 3DMG allows a person to move in three dimensions instead of just two dimensions like we normally do. This adds a crucial boost in speed and mobility that is necessary when fighting Titans. Eren and his friends graduate, choose the military branch they wish to serve in, and start their lives as trained soldiers ready to fight the overwhelming Titan power.
About Manga and Attack on Titan
Manga has a distinct difference from American comic books in that the books are “backwards” meaning you read them from back to front unlike every other book in America that is read front to back. In addition, manga is read from the rightmost panel to the leftmost panel dissimilar to the way we English speakers usually read things. Attack on Titan is strictly a black and white comic. The text is mainly composed inside of speech bubbles with only the occasional dramatic narrator statements written across a page or two. Larger gutters seem to be placed between panels vertically but smaller ones in between the panels side to side. The panels are generally orderly with only sound effects and speech bubbles bleeding into the gutters or speech bubbles bridging between two panels. The use of lines to create drama or urgency in a scene as well as the frequent use of sound effects are very distinctive in Attack on Titan and many manga. The alternating of serious thoughtful scenes and dramatic, action-filled ones really brings to life the situations of the world in Attack on Titan. Between the action and drama of everyday life in such a world, there are presented some very interesting psychological questions. How far can you go before fear takes over? When fear makes you lose the will to fight is there anything that can be done to make you push past the fear and continue the struggle? Faced with such overwhelming forces, would it be easier to just give up instead of fighting? Even when faced with the possibility of human extinct, corruption still runs ramped so is corruption a fundamental part of human society? Is humanity worth fighting for? Many fans of Attack on Titan appreciate the themes of loss, struggling to survive in a world that is working against you, and the idea that “the good guys don’t always win” which give this manga a different flavor than many others. Attack on Titan’s components can be seen in the world today. ISIS, for example, can be seen as representing the Titans while Christians and others represent humanity. Both the humanity in AOT and my metaphorical “humanity” are dealing with a force of unknown numbers and resources that you can’t communicate responably with and who participate in acts of senseless killing.
Hajime Isayama, the author and illustrator of Attack on Titan, was tired of seeing the same type of manga out. Authors and publishers had discovered a formula to stick to when making a manga which guaranteed popularity. The plot lines therefore became very similar and repetitive. Isayama wanted something different so he decided to make his own manga. After creating Attack on Titan, Isayama had major problems getting his work published as many publishers thought his drawing style to be amateurish. Finally after almost giving up, the publishing company Kodansha gave Isayama his big break and the rest is history. The series has sold over 52 million volumes worldwide and is continuing to gain increasing fame in countries like the United States. The books have been translated into English, Mandarin, and German. The volumes have been topping the charts almost since they began and haven’t stopped since. In Japan 2014, Attack on Titan, or Shingeki no Kyojin, sold 8,342,268 copies of its manga, ending One Piece’s five year reign as top-selling comic series (2009-2013). Isayama is blow away by the popularity of the series and never dreamed Attack on Titan would rank #1 amoung comic series in Oricon’s sales chart for the first half of 2014. In 2011 and 2013, the series ranked #4 but it nearly doubled its sales, earning the spot as #1 in 2014. In America, Attack on Titan ranked #1 (Vol. 12) and #2 (Vol. 1) between May 5-June 1, 2014 in Publishers Weekly on the chart for Top Ten Graphic Novels. The series also ranked #1 (Vol. 1), #2 (Vol. 2), #5 (Vol. 12), #6 (Vol. 3), and #9 (Vol. 9) in Publishers weekly for June 2-June 29, 2014. The series had an anime and recently a two part movie produced and inspired many spin-off series.
Attack on Titan has risen in popularity in America to almost being mainstream when, before, much manga was reserved to a small group of dedicated fans. The series has really helped open up the manga genre to a wider audience and the accessibility from the internet has really widened the reach of manga. Now if you go to a Con (Convention) you are more than likely to encounter at least one but probably more Attack on Titan cosplayers. The memorabilia is spreading to more and more stores. You can buy an AOT t-shirt at F.Y.E. or Hot Topic as well as jewelry, bags, belts, keychains, ect. I can walk into Barnes and Noble whenever I want and buy a volume of Attack on Titan manga. There also was an Attack on Titan and Subaru Forester commercial recently which hyped excitement for the live-action movie and vehicle at the same time. It peaked the interest of some viewers, inspiring them to see the movie or buy a volume of the manga. On the other hand, some people are against the series. One such person sent over 1,000 death threats to Hajime Isayama via his official blog. The individual, it is speculated, is a foreigner probably enraged by the resemblance of an AOT character, Dot Pixis, with a notorious general in the Imperial Japanese Army, Yoshifuru Akiyama. China recently has decided to put an embargo on many anime and manga including Attack on Titan for its violent scenes and possible political undertones. Some say the ever-encroaching Titans in the series to be a metaphor for mainland China and Japan. Overall though, from the variety of interesting characters to the mystery of the Titans to the plot twists, psychological ponderings, and action scenes many people around the world can’t help but love this series.
